Kava has always been considered to have a calming effect, and users are described as becoming mellow and reflective, rather than stimulated or combative.1 Its active ingredients are kavalactones, which account for 3–20% of the root of the plant.2

Studies suggest that kavalactones may induce relaxation by affecting the blood levels of certain neurotransmitters, including GABA, noradrenaline and dopamin.2,3,13 This can bring about relaxation.
